The first settlers in Podstrana were an old Illyrian tribe, known as the Delmeti, who settled in this region before the Romans came in and founded Pituntium, from which Podstrana eventually grew. This growth occurred during the many centuries Podstrana was controlled by Greek, Roman and Turkish rulers. Today, Podstrana is an up-and-coming tourist resort, providing all the necessary facilities and activities needed in a modern tourist hot-spot. The marvellous sea, combined with the hot sun and plenty of things to experience in the vicinity of the town, make Podstrana a place gladly visited by sailors traveling in the Adriatic.

Despite being of relatively small size, Podstrana offers plenty in terms of interesting things to discover, being rich in monuments of historic and cultural significance, like the church of St. George, the castle of Cindro, the church of St. Anthony and Rocco, the old parish church, church of St. Fabian, the remains of an ancient Roman villa and many more. Podstrana organizes many entertaining events and cultural evenings during the summer, of which the most famous is the celebration of St. Ante Padovanski, the patron saint of Podstrana, which takes place in June. Because it is located near Split, Podstrana has easy access to marvellous Split sights, like the Diocletian palace, the Iron Gate, the statue of bishop Gregory of Nin and the cathedral of St. Duje. The archeological findings in the wider Podstrana area include many remains of ancient Roman villas and mosaics, the Pituntija megalithic blocks, numerous sculptures and many other curious structures and artifacts, mostly of Greek or Roman origin. Podstrana has great potential for island hopping excursions, being supremely positioned near several major Croatian islands, like Brac, Hvar, Solta and Vis.

Summers in Podstrana are hot and without rain, with air temperatures being on average around 30 degrees Celsius during the day. Other typical features of a Mediterranean climate in Podstrana include above average sea temperatures during the summer, while autumn and winter months experience an increasing influx of wind and rain. The best time to visit would be in June or September, avoiding the peak of the summer season, whilst still enjoying all the benefits, like lower prices, a smaller number of visitors and plenty of available accommodations, berths and vessels.
